GRP Cable Trough: Technical Specifications And Engineering Parameters

Oct 26, 2026 Leave a message

Pultruded Glass-Reinforced Polymer (GRP) cable troughs-designated as solid-bottom or ventilated composite raceways-are non-metallic electrical containment profiles manufactured in accordance with NEMA VE 1, IEC 61537, and BS EN 61537 standards. The system provides continuous bottom support and environmental isolation for low-voltage power, control, instrumentation, and telecommunication cabling in industrial facilities.

Material Formulation and Composite Structure

The profile is manufactured via continuous pultrusion using thermosetting liquid resins reinforced with structural E-glass filaments:

Resin Matrix Systems:

Isophthalic Polyester: General industrial grade suitable for exposure to inorganic salts, dilute acids, and moderate industrial atmospheres. Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT) ≥ 90°C per ASTM D648.

Vinyl Ester: High-crosslink-density polymer for heavy chemical service (concentrated mineral acids, alkalis, and organic solvents). HDT ≥ 105°C per ASTM D648.

Fiber Reinforcement Structure:

60% to 70% total glass fiber content by weight per ASTM D2584.

Longitudinal structural roving (E-glass, ASTM D578) aligned parallel to the profile axis for flexural and tensile load-bearing.

Continuous Strand Mat (CSM) or stitched multi-axial fabric layers for transverse mechanical strength and fastener hole retention.

Surface Barrier Layer: A 0.25 mm to 0.40 mm synthetic surface veil (polyester or acrylic) providing a resin-rich outer layer (>85% resin by weight) to limit glass fiber prominence under environmental weathering.

Flame and Flammability Properties: Formulated with alumina trihydrate (ATH) fillers to achieve ASTM E84 Class 1 (Flame Spread Index ≤ 25), UL 94 V-0, and a Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) ≥ 28% per ASTM D2863.

Dimensional Profiles and Manufacturing Tolerances

GRP cable troughs are supplied as straight channels with solid or slotted bottoms, configured with matching flanged or snap-in covers:

Internal Widths: 100 mm, 150 mm, 200 mm, 300 mm, 450 mm, 600 mm (Tolerance: ±2.0 mm).

Inside Side-Rail Depths: 50 mm, 75 mm, 100 mm, 150 mm (Tolerance: ±1.5 mm).

Wall Thickness: 3.0 mm, 3.5 mm, 4.0 mm, 4.5 mm (Tolerance: ±0.3 mm).

Standard Stock Lengths: 3,000 mm and 6,000 mm (Tolerance: ±5.0 mm).

Base Form Factors:

Solid Bottom: Continuous base for complete mechanical containment and drop-out prevention.

Perforated Bottom: Base stamped with staggered drainage/ventilation slots (7 mm x 25 mm typical), keeping bottom open area under 20% to retain structural rating.

System Components, Hardware, and Field Machining

Fittings: Segmented and compression-molded 90° horizontal bends, equal tees, four-way crosses, and vertical inside/outside risers matching profile depth and resin type.

Splice Connectors: Pre-punched GRP or 316 stainless steel (SS316) joint plates fastened with M8/M10 carriage bolts and flange nuts. Slotted bolt holes accommodate thermal displacement across project design temperature differentials (Delta T).

Support Spacing and Deflection: Support center-to-center distances typically range from 1.5 m to 3.0 m, calculated to keep structural mid-span deflection within L/200 under specified cable load classes per NEMA VE 1.

Field Modification: Cutting is performed using carbide-tipped or diamond-grit continuous rim saw blades (minimum 3,000 RPM). Cut edges and drilled holes require field application of a catalyzed thermosetting resin sealant to encapsulate exposed glass filaments.
